DESCRIPTION:Main Event:\nJoin us on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026\, for our Sky Island Performance. Our performance will feature string trio by Dohnányi and the ever-famous “American” string quartet by Dvorak and a surprise jazzy addition. \nGet Tickets Here: http://wjarts.org/american-dreams\n\n\nMeet our Guest Violinist!\nThis concert will feature guest violinist Claire Armstrong. \nInspired by the classical music radio channel her father would play on the drive to school\, Claire Armstrong began learning the violin at age 11 after a few years of begging. After proving to her parents she would practice\, she began taking lessons with Ryan Teynor whom she studied with for 7 years. During this time\, she further developed her love for music and was inspired to pursue a career as a Violin Instructor as a means to create a safe space for students to find belonging and self-expression through music. Determined to make music a centerpoint of her life\, she auditioned and was accepted to Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University(USU). \nUnder the mentorship of Professor Rebecca McFaul with additional guidance from the Fry Street Quartet\, Claire developed a great passion for chamber music\, playing in numerous chamber ensembles\, working with living composers\, and participating in the Fry Street Quartet Summer Chamber Music Camp in 2021 and 2022. Furthering her experience\, she also performed with the USU Symphony Orchestra\, USU Opera\, in solo and collaborative recitals\, and had the opportunity to write and record the violin part for 5 original songs by varying Artists. \nWhile pursuing her Performance Degree\, Claire also developed her teaching skills by running a small studio; In her final semester\, she was hired by USU as a Violin Instructor for Non-Major students. Additionally\, with guidance from Professor McFaul\, she developed and taught a course for Music Major Freshman to prepare them for the degree ahead. As a proud recipient of the Chamber Music Project Internship\, Claire had the opportunity to share her passion for chamber music by teaching young musicians. While completing the internship\, she orchestrated the “Side-by-Side Project\,” which provided young musicians the opportunity to play alongside collegiate volunteers. The following summer\, she was hired as a coach for young musicians for the Chamber Music Project Summer Camp. In support of the arts\, Claire also served as a Caine Ambassador for 3 years where she promoted her College and encouraged students to pursue artistic degrees. Music has been a pivotal element in Claire’s life\, providing her with a safe space for personal growth\, creative expression\, and belonging. Now\, having earned her degree\, she looks forward to creating that same space for others through teaching and performing music. \n  \n\n  \nWant more concerts like this one? The program features piano quintets by Ottorino Respighi and John Field\, string quartets by Ernest Bloch\, Frank Bridge\, and Nino Rota\, and solo piano works by Chopin\, Debussy\, and Scriabin—highlighting Mechka’s dynamic artistry alongside the quartet’s rich ensemble sound. \nEstimated duration: 90 minutes\, including one short break. \nAbout Our Guest\nMechka is a concert pianist\, composer\, teacher\, and accompanist based in Berlin\, Germany. She has performed across the globe in orchestral\, chamber\, and solo settings. Written as a birthday gift for his violin teacher Eduard Rietz\, the piece is scored for double string quartet\, a unique and ambitious arrangement for the time. By treating all eight instruments as equal participants\, Mendelssohn created a rich\, symphonic texture that revolutionized chamber music. Notably\, the Octet features four movements\, blending youthful exuberance with profound sophistication\, which is characteristic of Mendelssohn’s early style. \nThe famous scherzo\, inspired by Goethe’s Faust\, is particularly remarkable. With its light\, ethereal character\, it evokes a sense of magic and whimsy that would later be perfected in Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream Scherzo. This scherzo not only highlights Mendelssohn’s signature lightness but also his ability to create vivid\, enchanting imagery through music. \nMoreover\, the Octet is a groundbreaking work that expanded the boundaries of chamber music\, combining the intimacy of the genre with the grandeur of symphonic composition. He quickly gained fame for works like the Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and his revival of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. In his compositions\, such as the Italian Symphony and the oratorio Elijah\, Mendelssohn skillfully blended classical form with Romantic lyricism. \nAs conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra\, Mendelssohn not only shaped concert practices but also elevated the orchestra’s reputation. The work\, whose title translates to A Little Night Music\, is a serenade traditionally performed by a chamber ensemble. It consists of four movements\, though it was initially planned to include five. Known for its elegance and balance\, the serenade epitomizes the Classical style\, with the lively and iconic first movement (Allegro) being especially popular. Its cheerful and refined character has made it a favorite in concert repertoire and popular culture \nBorodin’s String Quartet No. 2 in D major (1881) is a cornerstone of Romantic chamber music\, known for its melodic beauty and emotional depth. Dedicated to his wife\, it reflects their relationship\, particularly in the third movement\, “Notturno\,” a lyrical piece often performed independently. This informal event brings music lovers up close\, offering a rare and personal connection to the art of chamber music. \nDid you recently enjoy a Candlelight concert and want more chamber music in your life? Join us and see exactly how musicians make the magic happen! \nAdmission is free\, but RSVP below so we can plan for the right number of chairs. While you’re here\, explore our other events\, including the concert this rehearsal is preparing for. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy live music in an intimate and welcoming setting! \n  \nThank you to the Midvale Senior Center for hosting our open rehearsal. \n  \n\n  \nWhat to expect and how to prepare: \n\nThis is NOT a performance – it’s a rehearsal. Expect stops and starts at any point during the pieces as the musicians work through the music.\nPlease refrain from applause\, as this is an informal rehearsal setting.\nWe kindly ask that you do not ask questions until the end or during breaks in the rehearsal\, so as not to disrupt the flow of work.\nQuiet snacks and water are acceptable\, but please be considerate of others.\nAbsolute silence is not required\, but we ask that you remain respectful and avoid causing any disruptions to the quartet’s process.\nThere may be a complete playthrough of entire movements\, but this is not guaranteed.\nThroughout the rehearsal\, the musicians will likely discuss aspects such as timing\, phrasing\, dynamics\, cues\, and general showmanship.
